H-1B Salary Hike To $130,000 - Clear And Present Danger To Indian IT Professionals

Last week U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) introduced a new legislation ‘‘High-Skilled Integrity and Fairness Act of 2017’’ which sent shivers down the spine of Indian IT companies. As a result the stock market value of few Indian IT giants slumped all of a sudden.
“My legislation refocuses the H-1B program to its original intent – to seek out and find the best and brightest from around the world, and to supplement the U.S. workforce with talented, highly-paid, and highly-skilled workers who help create jobs here in America, not replace them,” said Lofgren. “It offers a market-based solution that gives priority to those companies willing to pay the most. This ensures American employers have access to the talent they need, while removing incentives for companies to undercut American wages and outsource jobs.
Lot of people are speculating the pros and cons of this proposed bill. At the surface it appears that the cons are more than the pros. Here is a quick analysis of the potential impact to Indian IT Industry and Indian employees:
Impact to Indian employees working in the USA on H-1B
Remember, employers need to make their profit margin. If this becomes a law you may lose your job because your employer may hire a local American at a lower cost. Instead of paying 130k to an Indian on H-1B, the employer may pay 90k or 100k to an American employee. As a result the folks who are currently in USA may need to pack their bags and come to India.
Impact to Indian employees working in the Indian IT companies in India
When a lot of skilled H-1B employees will return from USA the demand and supply situation will change here in India hence the low performing IT professionals in India may lose their jobs too.
On top of this, a lot many people with H4 and EAD may return to India as well, resulting in greater supply of talent. Imagine the situation where a lot of good people with Onsite experience become available in Indian market, this may result in bringing the salary bar lower.

Other side effects:
  • Night shifts from India may increase or the working hours of Indian may get changed to overlap with the US time zone because there will be fewer people workingat Onsite.
  • Near shoring may increase. IT companies may look for options like Canada or South American nations to setup their delivery centers. This will allow overlap with US timezone. But may result in decreased revenue.
  • Lot of young professionals may leave the job and choose to opt for higher studies like MBA or Masters degree.
  • Indian companies may look for new customers and new business in the non US regions like Europe, Asia, Australia, South Africa etc. They may also focus on Indian markets more than ever.
  • Focus will shift on creating platform or solutions where minimal human interaction is required.
  • Usage of video technology, live meetings, telepresence, virtual reality etc. may increase.
  • Stock market value of some companies may take a temporary hit but few smaller companies may get closed or may get merged with bigger companies.
  • Body shopping companies will be severely impacted because they may not be able to make profit margins.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This legislation has been introduced at the time other executive orders have been issued by the President. Few of those are:

Titled “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States,” the EO "suspends" the immigrant and nonimmigrant entry of all nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen for 90 days from the date of the order.

The same EO also suspends the visa interview waiver program that was in place at U.S. consulates worldwide. The interview waiver program, referred to as “dropbox” processing in some U.S. consulates, exempted some visa renewal applicants from an in-person consular interview. The suspension of the interview waiver applies to all U.S. visa applicants regardless of country of nationality or citizenship, and means that all visa applicants will be required to attend an interview unless it is not required by statute. This will likely cause wait times for visa interviews to increase significantly.
The EO also instructs the State Department and various security agencies to implement significant changes to screening processes that will apply to all immigration programs. Further details on this new program are expected in the days ahead.

Impact of Other Executive Orders
President Trump has also signed two other Executive Orders directly related to immigration programs, with more expected to be issued in the days ahead.  On January 25, 2017, he signed an EO titled “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States” and on January 26, 2017, another EO titled, “Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements,” was issued.
While many details set forth in these EOs remain to be fleshed out, it is clear that the Trump Administration intends to place an increased emphasis on immigration enforcement, particularly in regard to the removal of those who have been convicted of crimes and those who have been charged with crimes. While the Administration is expected to provide more information about its enforcement priorities in the days ahead, it is expected that there will also be an increase in efforts to remove persons who have overstayed after a lawful entry.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Given the current situation, if you are an IT professional, this is the right time for you to get back to the basics and focus on learning new processes, methods and technologies. It is best to lay low as of now. Let the dust settle down in the next few months and wait till the time you have a clear vision.

Reach fisherman’s wharf early (before 6 pm), parking in long term parking structure or open lots ($20-30), going to embarcadero or better to Ghirardeli square waterfront, have dinner, watch fireworks (people start reserving spaces w/ blankets and mats from 5 pm, you also better have warm/layered clothing, it’ll get cold/breezy after 7-8 pm), come very late (2 am) back home.

BART, cab/cabel-car – moving around in public transport won’t be that convenient (toooo much crowd, traffic, time consuming, queues and dependency).

21 Important Travel Tips for First Time International/ USA Travelers

Important things to know if you are traveling to the US for the first time

- Getting along with People

USA is a huge country and it hosts folks from various origins/ countries. There can be a huge difference in the lifestyle within USA based on the city/ region in which you are going to stay. For example, east and west host people from different origins. If you are from asian origin you can be rest assured that you will find lot of asians in USA which will make you feel at home. However, make sure you mix with all the people irrespective of their origin. Make friends. Socialize.

- Weather Conditions/ Climate

Check online for the weather conditions of the area where you are going to land and stay. United States is a huge country and the weather conditions can be extremely cold or extremely hot. Make sure you carry necessary clothes with you.

- Understand the locality

Before you fly to USA make sure you have done enough online research on the locality in which you are going to stay or work. Google for near by grocery shops, markets. Use Google maps to understand the distance and available routes.

- Understand the Transport System

Find out about the local transport system. Check whether public transit system by bus or train is available or not. Understand that in USA most people use their personal Cars for commuting from one place to another and there are few places in USA where the public transport system is not as good as it is in India. So you need to be completely prepared and aware of the local transport system before you arrive in USA. For example, make sure you know how to reach from Airport to Hotel and from Hotel to Grocery shop etc.

- Make sure you get your international driving permit

Before you arrive in USA make sure you get your international driving permit from your home country.

For leading a smooth life, driving a car is a must in USA. Life can be a nightmare if you don't know driving. With the help of IDP you can rent a car and then prepare to get driving license for United States.

- Timezone

One more important factor is the timezone. Understand that USA has different timezones like Pacific, Central and Eastern. Unlike India, different cities have different timings and the difference between east and west coast is around 3 hours.

Travel Tips For First Timers

  • International flights recommend that you check in at least 4 hours ahead of the flight, so it is advisable to keep a one hour buffer and arrive at the airport at least 5 hours ahead of your flight time, specifically if this is your first international journey. Don't forget to read and understand your travel ticket carefully. Don't make basic mistakes like arriving for a flight at 1.30 in the night when actually the flight is at 1.30 in the noon.

  • Carry your destination address and a pen. You will need it at the time of check in.

  • Your passport, tickets, destination/ hotel address, insurance are very important documents. Make sure they are kept safe throughout the journey.

  • Understand the baggage rules, maximum number of bags allowed, the weight and size restrictions. These vary from country to country and may also be different for different airlines. It is best to check on the website of the airline on which you have booked your ticket.

  • At the time of check-in you will get boarding pass(es) for your flight/ connecting flights. Read them carefully and keep them secure.

  • In the flight, drink enough water. Take good rest/ sleep. This will help you tackle the jet lag later.

  • If you have connecting flights, make sure you know the flight number of the next flight and by looking at the displays at the airport you can find out the gate number from which the connecting flight will depart.

  • Before your flight lands you will be given a arrival form/ customs form. Fill that form carefully with all the right information from your passport, ticket and visa. It will also ask you about the value of articles that you are carrying/ amount of cash that you need to declare. If you don't get this form on the flight then you will get it at the airport.

  • When you land, make sure you carry all your belongings with you. Don't forget anything on the flight, specifically things like mobile/ mobile charger.

  • At arrival you will face a short interview, where the customs officer will verify your visa and the purpose of your visit. They may also take your picture and fingerprints. Don't worry this is just a basic check.

  • Next, collect your check in bags from the baggage area. Proceed to exit. You may or may not need to go through the baggage screening process. In case you are asked to go through the screening make sure you provide all the details accurately. DO NOT Lie.

  • That's it. You have finally arrived. Meet your loved ones waiting for you outside the gate or follow the signs of taxi/ ground transportation/ shared ride as required.

Useful Tips to Buy a Used Car in USA

What are the key considerations to buy a used car in USA ?

(read : What all things do you need to consider when you are new to USA and you need to buy a used car)

Following is some gyan which I acquired when I was going through the drill :

- We should prefer Honda, Toyota, Nissan.

- Mileage should preferably be less than 100K.

- Clean Title(Obviously).

- KBB value matters.

- You got to take it to a mechanic to ensure everything is okay at a high level.

- You need to pay certain % amount to DMV based on the buying price, so if you buy the car for 8K USD then you should think of showing it as 3K USD so that you can save some money. Remember to talk to the seller on this point before you sign the deal.

- Seller doesn't need to be present in person at DMV for the transfer or ownership. Seller just needs to sign the document and give it to the buyer. The buyer needs to go to DMV with required document.

- You should buy and activate your car insurance on the day on which you take ownership of the car in your name.

- You don't need a driver's license to buy a car insurance. However, if you don't have a license then the insurance premium will be on the higher side.

- If you are ready to buy start hunting on craigslist

- Also ensure to run a carfax report to check that the title is clean.

These were the points on top of my head, please add your suggestions.

Hope this helps.

Santa Clara DMV Behind the Wheel Test - Useful Tips

Before you arrive for your “behind the wheel test” make sure you get your basics right:

1. Make sure you have good driving experience in California/ USA. At least, 500 miles of experience should be good.

2. Since you have scheduled an appointment for behind the wheel test you must have already got your learner's license few days back. Make sure you read the rules book again before you show up for the test. This is recommended so that the key rules will be fresh in your mind. For example, what needs to be done if school bus comes, what needs to be done if emergency vehicle shows up, what needs to be done if it rains etc.

3. For behind the wheels test you should use a car with which you are familiar. This will give you confidence.

4. While giving the test, just focus on driving and following the rules. Don't worry about what the examiner is thinking or doing or writing.

5. In the test, while driving, if you feel you have made a mistake then don't worry about it and dont allow it to block your mind. Focus on your driving and continue to follow the rules.

6. Before you show up for the test, make sure you know what are the major mistakes and what are the minor mistakes.

7. Try to practice on the actual test routes two days ahead of the actual exam date. This will make you familiar of the route, surroundings etc.
